I spent a few hours this morning at Safeway selecting the fresh food that will be flown over to the field camp on Umnak Island this weekend. When I got back to the ship just after lunch time, I was surprised to see that Chris, Jake and the Thompson’s hard working crew had nearly finished loading all the marine EM equipment aboard, as shown in the photo below.
So we are one day ahead of schedule now since we were originally planning to load the gear tomorrow.
So that’s the good news. The bad news is that so far none of the incoming flights to Dutch Harbor airport have been able to land due to the fog. I just heard from our students Marah and Chloe that their flight has returned to Anchorage and so they rebooked for tomorrow. There are four other students and postdocs that are on later flights today and we are now just beginning to see blue skies (at 13:30) so fingers are crossed that they make it out today. Here’s what the fog looked like around 10:00 – the pavement strip on the right is the runway at the airport.
